The American Civil Liberties Union erased gender-specific words of a quote by Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Saturday in a tribute to the former Supreme Court justice on the anniversary of her death.
As part of its tribute to the “champion” of “gender equality,” the ACLU tweeted one of Ginsburg’s quotes but changed it to make women “people” and all female pronouns “they” or “their.”
“The decision whether or not to bear a child is central to a [person’s] life, to [their] well-being and dignity,” the adjusted quote read. “When the government controls that decision for [people], [they are] being treated as less than a fully adult human responsible for [their] own choices.”

The ACLU was met with backlash on Twitter.
“Why are you literally erasing the word ‘women’ from the words of one of the world’s most admired women?” one user asked.

Another reprimanded the ACLU, calling the organization “trash.”
“RBG is one of the most admired WOMEN in the history of American politics… and you erased the word ‘woman’ from her own quote,” he wrote. “You guys are literally trash.”
One award-winning journalist labeled the post “dishonest and misleading.”

“A quote is what it is and the generally accepted rule is not to alter other people’s words,” Kim Willsher tweeted. “If you’re going to quote them, you should quote what they actually said or wrote, otherwise it’s dishonest and misleading especially when someone is no longer around to approve the change.”
The Washington Examiner reached out to the ACLU for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
